Occasionally, you may receive an HTTP Status 400 – Bad Request error with the message "Request header is too large" in the Chrome browser. In most cases, this error appears when attempting to open or download a resource in one of the Libraries' EBSCOhost or ProQuest databases. Here is an example of what this error looks like:

To fix this error, complete the following instructions then open the resource again:

Update Chrome to the current version:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. In the top right corner of the browser, click the 3-dot More menu.
  3. Click Help.
  4. Click About Google Chrome.
  5. Click Update Google Chrome. If you can't find this button, then you're running the latest version.
  6. Restart Chrome.

Clear your browser cache:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. In the top right corner of the browser, click the 3-dot More menu.
  3. Hover over More tools and click Clear browsing data.
  4. From the Time range dropdown, select All time.
  5. Check all the boxes.
  6. Click Clear data.
  7. Restart Chrome.

By following these instructions, you should be able to resolve the HTTP Status 400 – Bad Request error message. If these instructions do not resolve the error, contact the GS Libraries for additional help.
